I had seriously perfect hair in Perth. It was so on point that even Flora, my room mate on this trip, mentioned in surprise one morning that my hair was totally “wash and go”. I hardly needed to blow dry it. It was mostly just freshly washed each morning, naturally dried and then it would cascade down in soft, romantic, loose curls. Like look at that hair. I can’t believe those tresses were on my head.
My secret to such effortless “wash and go” hair is my recent Mucota DYNA Argan Oil Treatment and DYNA Perm that my stylist, Elein Chong, from my new hair sponsors, Headlines Hairdressing, strongly recommended.
Headlines Hairdressing recently opened its latest branch at International Plaza, following the success of their first branch at China Square Central. The salon carries a limited but specialised range of brands for colour and treatments and opt to do so after consideration of their effectiveness and value to customers.
The salon boasts rows of full-length mirrors, plush leatherette swivel seats and a roll-away side table which you can place your bags and slot magazines you’re browsing in. The mostly monochrome setting of the salon is minimalist chic.
The same clean look is also found in the hair wash section of the salon where instead of a hard plastic, a leatherette finishing makes the table wash set up more comfortable for customers.
As with most full-service salons, Headlines Hairdressing offers a small selection of hot and chilled beverages for their customers. My session was a fairly long one (around three hours plus) as I would do both the Mucota DYNA Argan Oil Treatment and the DYNA Perm in one sitting and Elein was very thoughtful to have offered me both a Milo (for my hungry tummy) and a cup of warm green tea.
The Mucota Dyna range of products were identified the best way to treat and care for their customers tresses with lasting effects while still being relatively affordable. In fact, co-owner and director of Headlines Hairdressing, Jerry, is the sole educator of Mucota products in Singapore and Headlines Hairdressing is one of the pioneering salons that brought in the Mucota Dyna treatments.
So anyway, this was what Elein had to work with…
My tresses had not been treated or cut since May, earlier this year, save for some ad-hoc blow outs and hairstyling for a couple of special occasions. I hadn’t taken the time to get a trim or treatment since my last colouring job to even out the brassy tones in my lower part of my hair towards the ends. You can see that the bleached ends of mine are splitting and the texture and feel of my longish hair is starting to look dry and frizzy. While it is naturally pin-straight, because my locks are no longer smooth and luxurious from the lack of care, it looks pretty raggedy.
Regrettably, the only time my hair looks acceptable these days is after I slather on ALOT of hair product (e.g. handfuls of serum or hair oil) or when I curl them so that the ends are curled and the super straight sharp ends of my tresses are hidden. The problem is… it actually takes me ages to get my hair sorted these days because without styling it is a disaster.
Can you imagine my apprehension (and the warning bells going off) when Elein suggested that after a pampering Mucota DYNA Argan Oil Treatment (that sounded way awesome) I go for soft, romantic curls… with a PERM.
Let’s just say, I’m no stranger to perms and I’ve done it once before. It was a digital perm and it was amazing for a full day or two, after which I fussed over styling it and found it extremely challenging to blow dry into beautiful waves or bouncy curls. Since that encounter, I’ve always recommended my friends to use a curling tong to achieve that gorgeous effortless blow out look.
However, Elein was really reassuring and told me that the DYNA Perm would not damage my hair any further (or she would not be recommending it to me). She promised that the results would be natural and require very little upkeep and styling.
Well when she put it that way, I couldn’t say no!
Mucota DYNA Argan Oil Treatment
Before I could perm my hair, Elein had my hair undergo intense treatment with the Mucota Dyna Argan Oil Treatment, one of Headline Hairdressing’s signature treatments. It’s a treatment they strongly advocate for all their customers who wish to pursue other chemical treatments.
The three-step Mucota Dyna Argan Oil Treatment from Japan is basically rebonding without the damage. It straightens out hair, shapes and “sets” it with a hot iron and is extremely effective in relaxing frizzy and unruly hair leaving it looking picture perfect, smooth and silky. It is also safe for pregnant women and totally ammonia and formaldehyde-free.
Step 1
After my hair wash, a customised DYNA Hair Treatment was carefully chosen from three different options that best suited my hair condition and desired outcome.
- DYNA CCA for restoring hair texture resulting in sleek and glossy tresses
- DYNA CAT to relax curly or damaged hair leaving hair with a soft and natural finish
- DYNA CA to maintain straightness of hair and leaving hair soft and smooth
The DYNA Hair Treatment contains the key ingredient, Argan Oil, the world’s most expensive plant oil extracted from the nut kernels of the resilient Argan Tree found in Morocco. This deeply nourishing plant oil is known to protect hair from sun damage while leaving it moisturised.
The treatment is left on for 20 – 30 minutes before being washed off.
Step 2
My freshly washed hair is then gently towel-dried and then blow-dried before a heated straightening iron is used to “set” my hair, helping it look naturally straight and voluminous (not excessively flat and pin-straight) after washing.
Step 3
The final step of the treatment involves application of the DYNA After Cream which locks and seals the treatment effect.
The cream is left on for about 10 – 15 minutes before it is rinsed off and blow-dried. My hair at this point looked luxuriously smooth with a bit of bounce, a change from my previously stick-straight, sharp-tailed unkempt zero maintenance ‘do.
If the DYNA Straight treatment was what I was looking for, I’d be done by now, but since I was doing the DYNA Perm, I wasn’t done just yet.
DYNA Perm
So my hair was already looking pretty darn fine, but why not push the envelope during my first hair makeover with Headlines Hairdressing?
Unlike most perms, the DYNA perm is both a treatment and perm rolled into one. My hair was rolled up in a mix of medium and large rollers, then spritzed with a perm lotion to break down the bonds within my hair, before the hot rollers are then connected to a heat source.
Depending on hair length and look that customers wish to achieve the time taken for the heated rollers to be placed on hair differs. For me, Elein suggested that we wanted large bouncy curls only towards the ends of my hair, which I totally seconded. I didn’t want curls all the way up my head because it wouldn’t look like a nicely done “blow out”.
After my timer was up, I was back in for one final wash and out for one final blow dry.
All I can say is, after the whole treatment, I looked at the mirror and was very pleased with Elein’s hard work, but I wasn’t hopeful that the curls would be as loose and natural after my first wash at home.
But, this is what my hair look like now with very little effort on my part.
Can you believe it? This wasn’t even completely blow-dried. I am not kidding.
I just walked out of the shower, twirled my hair a little, blow-dried my hair for like a minute or so before I got lazy and then left it to dry naturally.
I look like I went for a blow out, but the fact is… I didn’t. This is really my “wash and go” look.
Elein really did such a remarkable job on my hair. I didn’t expect my hair to be this easy to manage or as silky smooth.
It is not an understatement when I say, I don’t suffer from bad hair days anymore… at least for maybe the next three months, which is how long this gentle perm will last.
